Passage over the President's Objections
U.S. House and Senate, U.S. Constitution
A vote to override a presidential veto. It needs two-thirds of each chamber; if both reach it, the bill becomes law without the President's signature.
- A Yea meant:
- Override the veto.
- A Nay meant:
- Sustain it.
A vetoed bill returns to the chamber where it started with the President's objections. If two-thirds of that chamber agree to pass it, it goes to the other, and if two-thirds there agree as well, it becomes law (U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 7). The votes are taken by yeas and nays, with each member's name recorded.
