On the Amendment
U.S. Senate, Standing Rules of the Senate
A vote on whether to add the amendment named on this page to the bill or resolution. It changes the text; it does not pass the bill.
- A Yea meant:
- Adopt the amendment.
- A Nay meant:
- Reject it.
An amendment must be in writing and read, and copies given to the Majority and Minority Leaders, before it is debated (Senate Rule XV, paragraph 1). After cloture, only amendments filed in time are in order, and none that are not germane (Senate Rule XXII, paragraph 2).
The vote on the bill itself comes later. An amendment can also be disposed of without a direct vote, by a motion to table it.
